New Members

work by Brian David JohnsonSince establishing his studio in 2002, Brian David Johnson Fine Craft and Design has been working with architects, interior designers and individual clients, to design and fabricate custom furniture, cabinetry and architectural details.  His shop is located at the East Austin cooperative work space, the Splinter Group.  Ongoing current work includes a project with Bercy Chen Studio creating custom cabinetry, specialty built-ins, doors and custom furniture for a private Austin residence.

work by Redstart Paint DesignRedstart Paint Design's Rachael Shannon and Michelle Marchesseault design and execute paint concepts for residential and commercial spaces.  Redstart specializes in custom graphic design, interior finishes, murals, and more.



work by Susan WallaceSusan Wallace creates site specific, custom design including aluminum grillwork, screens, awnings and more. Her work melds 3-dimensional aesthetic concerns with the client's desire for functional, architecturally scaled solutions.  She recently rendered the new logo and name of PeopleFund in letters hand cut from 3/16" aluminum plate. The leaves are perforated aluminum, and the background is painted concrete board with an aluminum surround. Overall dimensions are 24"x36".

Laura Garanzuay in studioLaura Garanzuay, who has a structural engineering background and extensive experience in the field of industrial design, works in metal as well as a variety of durable materials, from cast concrete to cast hydra stone to wood.  In her studio, she creates residential and commercial architectural installations, furniture, lighting and fine art.

Projects

blackened and flashed paversBlackened and flashed pavers from the kilns of Clayworks have been used to restore the extensive patios of a private Central Austin estate.  To achieve the effect needed to match the original pavers, the studio fired them in a low oxygen kiln atmosphere, permanently darkening the red terra cotta pavers.

sliding wenge doorCurrent commissions underway at Ironwood Industries include four bronze lanterns for a client on Lake Austin, a large memorial unit for the First Unitarian Universalist Church, and several projects for a penthouse apartment in downtown Austin, including a sliding wenge door.

stainless steel sculptureLars Stanley Metalworks recently set in place a stainless steel sculpture designed to help create a focal point for The Triangle, a new multi-use housing/retail development at the intersection of Guadalupe and N. Lamar in Austin.  The piece reflects the identity of the project quickly to people speeding by this busy intersection.


work by LightcraftersLightcrafters is at work on far-flung residential and commercial projects including office parks in San Antonio, Florida and California, and several private homes.



custom outdoor showerMark Landers at Landers’ Studio has completed a custom outdoor shower with ipê wood and aluminum slats with stainless hardware detailing.  Ipê is a dense wood, harvested from naturally sustainable forests, and is naturally resistant to the elements.

Macek credenzaMacek Furniture has launched a new line of credenzas.  Mark Macek has also begun teaching at the University of Texas School of Architecture this fall. The course is entitled ARC 351R Wood Design, and students will learn woodworking, milling, and joinery techniques. Each student will design and build a unique piece of furniture during the semester.

ambry
Locke Design & Woodworks has designed and built an ambry, a cabinet to hold oils, for St. Pius V Catholic Church in Pasadena, Texas.  The Ambry is about 7 1/2 feet tall and is constructed of White Oak.

The Fall 2006 issue of Log Home Design Magazine chose Clayworks' multi-tile address plaque as one essential feature for a well appointed Southwestern style cabin.


Events

photo from last year's East Austin Studio TourMany of the artists and artisans who will open their studios to the public for the East Austin Studio Tour are AArC members.  The tour provides a chance to visit studios that have no gallery or showroom onsite.  During last year's tour (right) Susan Wallace opened her home studio to visitors. On Saturday November 18 and Sunday November 19 you can visit the studios of:  Fisterra, Susan Wallace, Blue Genie Art, Clayworks, Macek Furniture, Archaic, Brian David Johnson, and Blacksmith.

painting by Jennifer ChenowethThree oil paintings by Jennifer Chenoweth of Fisterra were selected for The University of Texas' Creative Research Laboratories juried show "All Together Now", running October 7 through 28, 2006, at 2832 East Martin Luther King Blvd.

Blue Genie Art Bazaar entrance
The annual Blue Genie Art Bazaar, held each year in the vast workshop and studio of Blue Genie Art Industries is a one-of-a-kind event for Austin. Beginning December 6 and continuing through Christmas Eve, the admission-free event will feature the work of over 60 local and regional artists and artisans.  Expect to see ceramics, original paintings, photographs, sculpture, accessories and more.

Lightcrafters will be participating in the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar
December 9–24.

You can also shop AArC online during the holidays and year round.  The AArC Gift Catalog offers one-of-a-kind and limited-edition works by our members.

Recognition

Texas Original logoKent Samuelson, of Lightcrafters, Inc. has been selected by the Texas Commission on the Arts to participate in their pilot program "Texas Original (TxO)."  Kent is one of 30 artisans and crafts people chosen for their high quality, original and authentic work.

Holly Kincannon of Archaic has received a 2006 Preservation Award from the Heritage Society of Austin for her work as principal designer on the interior restoration of St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown Austin.

Community

Wells Mason of Ironwood and Kathleen Ash of Studio K will show at the "Art for the Heart" event benefiting the American Heart Association, Thursday, November 16, 2006, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at AMS Studios, 4407 Bee Caves Road, Austin.

Fisterra Studio and Susan Wallace contributed to an art auction Oct. 21 at the Austin Children's Museum benefiting art+life+kenya in support of a home and school for AIDS orphaned children in rural Kenya.

Landers’ Studio has recently donated woodworking lessons to two major fundraising affairs.  In major benefits for the Breast Cancer Resource Center and for the Paramount Theater, Mark Landers offered two 2-hour lesson certificates to be auctioned in their silent auctions.
